Every Time the Sun Shines
I whitewashed the loft
told myself
for a month I'd drink the view
tame my wildness with words
finish something important
But all I've learned
is how to lick wounds
how when you rewrite the past
you break your own promises
and that bruises
share many different hues
Now it's head down Monday
so I mark it with dread
wonder at the taste
when I rejoin their ranks
gulping a last breath of free
before those waters close over
Handing back my soul
I trade everything
for a clean white shirt
a tie around my neck
and that same old mountain
of bills
I watch me drown
from up here
told myself
for a month I'd drink the view
tame my wildness with words
finish something important
But all I've learned
is how to lick wounds
how when you rewrite the past
you break your own promises
and that bruises
share many different hues
Now it's head down Monday
so I mark it with dread
wonder at the taste
when I rejoin their ranks
gulping a last breath of free
before those waters close over
Handing back my soul
I trade everything
for a clean white shirt
a tie around my neck
and that same old mountain
of bills
I watch me drown
from up here
