End of the Chain

To get what you want is to do yourself in
if the chains are removed and there's freedom within.
So, why bother to run to the end of the chain
only to reach the end and remain?

The safety we feel just to know there are limits,
the horror we'd feel if we really were free,
the pain and the heat as we drop to our knees,
knowing that when we're finally free
the anguish and heart ache were meant as a sign
that danger there is in being just mine.

The picture we see is a dog after school
chasing a bus with his teeth all a drool.
He chases the bus as he runs along side
biting and yelping as children ride by.
And what would he do if he caught that great bus,
biting the tires, his breath all a huff?
Dragging it back to the back yard to see,
digging a hole beneath an old tree
and burying it there with tires and crown,
there in the yard and there in the ground?

So, what would we do if we got our own wish,
gobble it down and lick on the dish?

Or order it up and then toss it away?
This is the question of, not now, but….someday.
