Inwardly
Slowly
I grew up out of the ground
from earth
neither bitter nor sweet
when it seemed only sky
had meaning
I spread myself
whether thinly or thickly
I could not tell
for at first feeling alive
was all that wooed me
with its taste of fresh fruit jam
I reached out
but discovered weeds
watching them rise
even in the shade
their mores endowed
with greater passions than my own
I noticed the tallest
sought to stifle my thoughts
to kidnap honesty
then maroon it alone
leaving it fly-tipped
rotting in a desert of ego
And then I became glad
understanding I was different
and not a bit like them inside
but it's a worrisome task
depending always on the friend
who my heart says
cannot lie
I grew up out of the ground
from earth
neither bitter nor sweet
when it seemed only sky
had meaning
I spread myself
whether thinly or thickly
I could not tell
for at first feeling alive
was all that wooed me
with its taste of fresh fruit jam
I reached out
but discovered weeds
watching them rise
even in the shade
their mores endowed
with greater passions than my own
I noticed the tallest
sought to stifle my thoughts
to kidnap honesty
then maroon it alone
leaving it fly-tipped
rotting in a desert of ego
And then I became glad
understanding I was different
and not a bit like them inside
but it's a worrisome task
depending always on the friend
who my heart says
cannot lie
