Where are the Victory Gardens
Lo, we have been at "war" now for over a decade
Fighting those who brought down our towering sense of invincibility
I remember the early days, lots of flags and speeches
A feeling of patriotism I'd not seen my entire life
But then something happened over the ensuing years
The country forgot, people lost interest
Meanwhile, tired, weary soldiers faced deployment after deployment
Wearing down their strength and their spirit, straining military families
Sadly, I know this all to well, firsthand
Having sent my wife and deployed myself to combat the evils of terror
Witnessed the maimed and wounded struggling to recover
Slow healing of scars seen and unseen, while everyone else remained unscathed
Sure there is the annual eloquence for veterans in May and November
The occasional clapping in airports when troops come home
But I can't help feeling that the U.S. is at peace
As it its troops continue to face war, alone
Maybe we went about this all wrong, forgot the lessons of the past
Like the last time when our freedom was at risk, democracy on the ropes
America pulled together as a nation, the sacrifice was complete and across the board
Rationing, civil defense drills, and victory gardens bloomed from Atlantic to Pacific
Unfortunately, I know that it is too late, at least this time
My only hope that the next time we go to war, I see Victory Gardens as far as the eye can see
Fighting those who brought down our towering sense of invincibility
I remember the early days, lots of flags and speeches
A feeling of patriotism I'd not seen my entire life
But then something happened over the ensuing years
The country forgot, people lost interest
Meanwhile, tired, weary soldiers faced deployment after deployment
Wearing down their strength and their spirit, straining military families
