That Basho had
complete command,
a biometric meter,
to speak a given line
in hand,
some seventeen
syllabic notes
and oddly scansioned

the needed note

the quest
at bay,
in any given

on any given day,
his breathe
remained identical,
and he was held
no cuckoo;
only his
was just right there,
for, he breathed

Thanks.....I'm working on expectations and how our sense of what should happen or what we want to force to happen is sometimes beyond our reach.
A young man I was playing racquetball with yesterday got really angry at himself because his thought was that he should have been able to return a certain hit. It was a very difficult shot. So, why get angry? He was just coming back to the sport….and had not played in a very long time. Why get upset when it does not go as you predict it should? I have been playing for twice as long as he has been alive...and I thought it was a difficult shot. He saw my making shots that he wanted to make and his way of making up for the difference was this display of hurt pride and false modesty. His expectations were totally unrealistic.
Just so, people forget or do not know that haiku writing as 21 rules, more than the romantic projection of syllables we learned in high school. But there is a basic and unstated concept that is never really talked about, the authentic construction of such a short poem from a single breath, an effortless feat done by the supreme master of the form. He had first mastered the breath of 17 syllables, and this is how it came to be given this dogmatic construction. He had the perfect volume of breath to speak in haiku. One breath, and 17 syllables. The concept then changes to what our own breath is. How do we breathe? He breathed like himself, and then I gave his birth name.
We should expect to write and talk and be like ourselves.
