Bolt from the Blue
When I worked out
I don't need all those things
they said I must have
the bolt from the blue came through
Then I started to wonder
why it took me so long
to understand in the first place
Truth is
you can have anything you want
anything at all
when you realize all the important things
are between your ears
and that nothing else matters
I handed the butler
the keys to my Bentley as I arrived home
My clever beautiful wife
ran down the steps of our fabulous mansion
threw her arms around me
and we kissed passionately
I had everything I desired from life
money, recognition and unobtrusive fame
There was all I could manage
of love, friendship and good fortune
the things they said I should have
were never in short supply
Then along came
that bolt from the blue
my life had been empty
and I hadn't even known it
the mist cleared
and I walked into the light
I carried on walking
away from everything I'd ever known
I turned my back on possessions
because the bolt from the blue
told me I could
Everything I needed
I already had
and now it felt good
knowing I could be God
within myself
knowing the only one who runs things
in my world
is me
So when death intervenes
I want to be ready
with nothing heavy to take with me
now I have the power
in my new life
never to fail

verse - I find it preachy and annoying - but you invest yours with an openness of mind and vision which I really admire. Good poem, though it probably could have done with a few more of your insightful, almost chewable lines.

You're correct Jack I should have ditched Bentley in the swimming pool two weeks before I got round to actually doing it. Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps the message has equal (maybe more) relevance to those of us who don't own Bentleys!

I ditched the Bentley in the swimming pool last week, Steven - I never realised how much enjoyment all that expensive rust affords me. As for output - as you know I've told myself I'll continue to churn on to 365 and then....???

reminds me of a novel i wept over some time back about a man who runs away from his wife and child and a succesful career to live in the woods among tribals.He gets spotted after about ten years and the family claims him back even though he doesnt wish to return and the man dies in the ensuing struggle.There is a line in that where his best friend looks at his deadbody and wonders what happens to people's smiles when they die!Oops sorry for digressing,this one is thoughtprovoking A, makes a point yes it does.

I wish I'd put all that in my poem now, Priya - the most dramatic thing I could manage here was abandoning a Bentley and a beautiful wife. I therefore resolve to weave a plot such as the one you describe into all my poems from this day on. Thanks for your kind feedback, dear.

I completely understand the message you're trying to portray but I love the title "Bolt from the Blue" and its repetition throughout the poem - it is placed beautifully.

Thanks Arryn - it's probably summed up by saying the only treasure is between your ears - thus rendering your Bentley (which you cant take with you when you die anyway) worthless. It wasn't mean to be super deep and probably only started because I'm nearing one of the reinvention phases in my own life. Thanks again for the feedback.
