the story of the Naupaka flower
Well long ago in ancient Hawaii there was a beautiful princess who lived far from the shore up in the mountains she was a curious child and grew kolohe as she matured playing tricks on the villagers and other mischiefs but she never left the village...
One day see climbed to the very top of the mountain as she loved to do and stared at the ocean as she thought it was amazing she wished to travel to it but it was a long hard journey
Soon her curiosity got the better of her and in the dead of night she snuck out and made her way to the lower villages close to shore tired weary and hurt from her journey
She tried to find help
A young fishermen tall and strong saw her
And took her home to feed her and allow her rest while he went to fish and she cleaned up
Hidden away in his house no one knew who she was
But the kahuna had heard of a princess who had run from her mountain home and became watchful of the guest
When the fisherman returned he took notice of her and immediately fell in love with her beauty
And as they talked they fell deeper and deeper in love
but when he had finally grown curious he asked her name
She said that he could not know
Being so smitten this did not affect him at all
Days later when he left to go fishing again
The Kahuna went to his house and discovered the girl was the missing princess
As she glowed with mana of the royalty and sent message to the mountain village
The chief sent warriors to bring her back
When the fisherman returned they lied to him saying she had run away and dived off the sea cliff
he became heart broken and destitute
The princess
Heart broken
Attempted to escape asst night again
But in her hurry she stumbled and tripped killing herself...
A great procession was made to grieve her death all were ordered to pay respects to the princesses body
As the fishermen approached he saw it was she his lover
And began to cry and soon became insane
And so in his grief he lept
Into the sea the only thing he had left
many days later the princess body was buried under her favorite shade tree in the mountain....
As Weeks went on a strange plant with half flowers began to grow under the tree and the seemed to reach for the sea while another much like it grew on the shore and grew towards the mountain
This flower came to be called the Naupaka
