when night swallows our shadows
holding them hostage
returning them only in daylight
it's a reminder

half of what we are...
..is dark

all smiles under sun's rays
trying to hide the unwanted aspect
& there it is
plain as the nose on your face

following you everywhere
constantly changing shape
stretching & condensing
putting on weight

just trying to fit
into your falsely defined space
as you stuff it further down

lying to yourself...
more than anyone else

it's a reality...solid fact
might as well own it
meant to keep ego in check

& yet...
we must also remember...
shades & layers
require depth

our other half...
...is light
