Image for the poem Once I was, and Now I am

Once I was, and Now I am

the soldier runs in shadows deep
where echoes call and silence fail
I, the soldier run through fallen ash
I must reach the bridge before it fell

the earth quake with my every steps
thunder in my ears the world's undone
the earth trembles my courage shakes
overhead droning enemy planes

bombs descend death from the cloud
still I must not rest relentlessly bold
my fear and terror in rhythms beat
there shall be no surrender or retreat

I scream with anger I cannot hear
waking up in the cold lonely night
remembering lives lived before
memories of then a past nightmare

Author's Note
This was a reoccurring dream a  long time ago. The last dream was me looking up as the bomb fell on the bridge. Actually it seemed to fall on me, but in my mind, it destroyed the bridge. In my dream I was Asian as I am, thus I could have been a Japanese soldier, a Vietnamese or Korean...definitely not my ethnicity now. Food for thought.
