sparkly unicorn boy

I'm the mother
of a sparkly unicorn child
most days he wakes up
with a giggle on his lips
and asks for tickles

He dresses
like a rainbow exploded
and fell into the shape of clothes
over his body

I don't always tell everyone
he's a boy
so if they make gender assumptions
I generally let it slide
I don't know what opinion
a random Uber driver
or parent at the park
might have about
a sparkly unicorn boy
and how their own biases
might fight to dim his spark

Even my sister in law
doesn't know what to do
with my little rainbow explosion
and asked someone in hushed whispers
if my child picked his own clothes
or if I deliberately dressed him that way
when I'm just happy
that he's happy in whatever
he chooses to put on his body

I'm the mother
of a sparkly unicorn boy
and his fifth birthday will be filled
with pink and purple
and glitter and sequins
and rainbow sprinkles
and I'll bottle his smiles
and make fairy dust to hex
the haters with happiness
in the hopes they find
their inner child
that doesn't need labels
to define happy

Author's Note
Honestly, I don't get that much hate for having a sparkly unicorn child, but I have come up against resistance to the way he expresses himself, mostly from family members.
