Mirror
we are standing
bare
skin on skin
the night thick around us
our shadows move
dancing
slowly
like they’ve done this before
you press against me
I wrap my arms around you
your breath stirs the air
warm
like something half-whispered
half-forgotten
you lift the camera
click
click
the flash stings
a split-second of daylight
before the dark folds back in
our lips meet
soft
then not
like waves that don’t ask permission
before they crash
again
again
the mirror watches
silently
or maybe not
maybe it holds its breath
with us
keeps our reflection
like a secret
it won’t ever tell
we are here
now
just for now
just long enough
to make a poem
the camera
can’t quite catch
bare
skin on skin
the night thick around us
our shadows move
dancing
slowly
like they’ve done this before
you press against me
I wrap my arms around you
your breath stirs the air
warm
like something half-whispered
half-forgotten
you lift the camera
click
click
the flash stings
a split-second of daylight
before the dark folds back in
our lips meet
soft
then not
like waves that don’t ask permission
before they crash
again
again
the mirror watches

or maybe not
maybe it holds its breath
with us
keeps our reflection
like a secret
it won’t ever tell
