read for hours, nothing that was on the
school curriculum, mind, I was a
pretty odd kid who wouldn’t go to school but
to the public library instead

Think we read because that's all we had.
I remember my parents lashing out and buying a small set of Encyclopaedia Britannica, possibly a childrens edition.I.loved just flicking through those pages and letting my mind wander.I kept them for many years but then came MS Encarta,then Google.....no mind wandering any more.
You write well about the past but Wodehouse never caught in in my Glasgow slum area.
