The Space Between
She's always been something special.
Someone who always had the right words,
the right touch,
the right look,
the right everything for every occasion.
Growing up together,
we were friends before we ever knew what relationships were about.
We laughed before we knew what heartbreak
felt like.
Shared secrets before we understood
their weight.
She's my anchor,
a constant in a world forever changing.
They say a man can't have a woman for a best friend.
They,
whoever they are,
were right and wrong at the same time,
a boundary that rests on a fine line.
We dance around the truth,
speaking in half measures,
in careful silence,
in glances that linger a second too long,
in touches that mean something more.
Some nights, i wonder what it would be like
to close the space between us,
to let my heart override my fear,
to touch her the way i always wanted to.
And sometimes, i swear i see it in her eyes too,
a hesitation, a longing, a question left unspoken.
But neither of us move, neither of us dare,
because losing each other would hurt more
than never knowing what could have been.
So here we stay,
balanced on the edge of something both agonizing and dangerous,
loving each other in every way except the one
that might destroy us.
