Maybe you could teach me something about sonnets. I don't know much about them, aside from Neruda and Shakespeare.
Well, I'm partial to Shakespeare, and went through most of his literary corpus in the bleak months of 2020, but I highly recommend AMERICAN SONNETS: an anthology edited by David Bromwich, and available from the Library of America, ISBN 978-1-59853-015-5.
It's an excellent overview of the form, which has been around for 700 years or so, and therefore has a rich enough history at this point to qualify it as one of the cornerstones of all poetry. But of course there are lots of online resources for learning about sonnets, such as The Poetry Foundation, or The Folger Shakespeare Library, where you can download Shakespeare's sonnets (and plays) for free, assuming you have access to a printer.
I'm biased of course, but I think if you can write a good sonnet then you can write anything, and an awful lot of the more famous literary names have written a few, such as Edna St. Vincent Millay, who was indeed a master of the form, and one of my favorite poets. In fact, I'd probably start with her. There are many editions of her collected sonnets, but I think you should be able to access a lot of them online by just Googling her name. She's a lot easier to read than Shakespeare since her English is way closer to ours in its diction.

It makes sense though, since a writer who doesn't like their own work will soon stop writing anything at all.
