he sold the horse to buy the cart;
but then, of course, although he was loth,
he had to sell the cart, at a
reduced price, to buy himself
a donkey, which he saw as something of
a substitute for both ..

Eeyore! He was always my favorite. There's something about this I absolutely adore. It's indicative of the ageless wisdom contained in children's stories. I purchased my grandson a huge book of Aesop's' fables and read every story to him until he could read them out loud himself - and each one contained wisdom that he is now demonstrating as a young man.
