Passing through

My fingers shrivel
I see cracks widen
An opening into future decay
My mind stutters and I know it’s ok
Life has to fade
We don’t have to be afraid

Sunlight peels the skin
Sometimes I want to stare…
Beyond the atmosphere
Into the blinding eye of Helios
Maybe just to find the mythical
Perhaps I’m becoming hysterical

Long in the tooth
Grabbing at meaningless stuff
I’m scraping about in the filthy fringes
Finding I’m as rotten as the next piece of meat
Like everyone else
I trick myself into believing I’m not so useless

My fingers shrivel
I’m aware no one’s gonna care
Sunlight burns continuously
I fall, forgotten…
Quite anomalously

So to an unknown field
There’s no more time to save…
Emptied into a shallow grave
The soil welcomes its own
Time to harvest what was sown
Take me home
