American Dream

You have no ambition
You who toil your life
Answering calls of the wealthy
Abuse your reward for service
You do not reach for greatness
Taking each day one at a time
Paying bills, minding children
Dissatisfaction the pay you receive
Don't you ever just want more?
Stretching each check to the brink
Despairing over waste
Irked when ends don't meet
No.
You're content where you are
Satisfaction in well spent coin
Joy in a hot meal served
Comfort in a full night's sleep
If one stops to think
If one just understands
You were born different
Your emotions always on the edge
Your mind always a scramble
Oddity your calling card
All you've ever wanted
Is a sense of normalcy
To live like others do
Collected within your mind
Handling day to day
Stable and content
A full belly
A safe place
A warm bed
A loyal companion
This is your "American Dream".
