A poem for each day of the month in which I was born

October 09
this momentary wonder  

i thank God for the breath, quick, in my body;
the thoughts that ruminate my fertile mind;
the opportunities that make me worthy
to linger on the sight side of the blind.

i thank God for the sunshine and the roses,
painting the earth with chiaroscuro life,
that when the plight of death his talons closes,
there is safe shelter from the savage strife.

i thank God for the birds that bring their anthems,
in spite of weather, snare, and trickery,
cresting the clouds that measure out flight sanctions
to strangulate the course of reverie.

i thank God for my friends and foes and neighbours,
who light a spark along my troubled path;
for love and spite, like favours and disfavours,
teach me to garner nurture out of wrath.

i thank God for this momentary wonder
of earth’s rehearsal for His Courts above;
for He is fitting me for greater grandeur,
befitting all who revel in His Love.
