Those who went before

Life is really miraculous
For everything I ever got
I got by the grace of my parents

And so those who went before me
Their hopes, their dreams, their sadness, their anxieties
Are still present in my heart

We are not isolated beings
All that my father ever recovered from
The love for reading of my mother
All this inside my soul lives on

What we experience now
Is the result of a dance of life of thousands of years
Remember those who have gone before

Don't think you know everything better than they did
Or that everything is different nowadays

Those who know the experience gathered through time
Will receive great gifts in the end
For man walks a narrow bridge

And those who went before show us the way

Author's Note
This poem is inspired by a book about software architecture written by the legendary Robert C. Martin, who has been writing code for more than half a century. In the introduction he says that young developers tend to think that the old rules of architecture no longer apply, that everything is new and different now. And that they are wrong. And I find this applies to so much of life. Yes, things change. In my lifetime of 38 years alone so much has changed. But the fundamental nature of humans, of the human mind, the soul, the heart - those things don't change. They are the same as they were thousands of years ago when humans began studying them. So it would be wise to not dismiss old wisdom just because it is old.
