The Tyranny of Dawn
Please let me sleep
I beg the early rays of the sun
just five more minutes
to close my eyes
but dawn answers back
trumpets blaring
Wake up sleepyhead, wake!
I bring you a bright new day
and so, as if against my will
first one eye
and then the other
are pried open by soft morning light
Sighing, I grudgingly accept defeat
watching dew glistening
like diamonds on seas of green
early birds looking for earlier worms
wondering if worker bees
are happy being so busy
I think they should get a union
and maybe I'll get a squirrel feeder
so they won't eat all the bird seed
Only later after coffee do I realize
That I'm blessed
if just a little bit tired
I beg the early rays of the sun
just five more minutes
to close my eyes
but dawn answers back
trumpets blaring
Wake up sleepyhead, wake!
I bring you a bright new day
and so, as if against my will
first one eye
and then the other
are pried open by soft morning light
Sighing, I grudgingly accept defeat
watching dew glistening
like diamonds on seas of green
early birds looking for earlier worms
wondering if worker bees
are happy being so busy
I think they should get a union
and maybe I'll get a squirrel feeder
so they won't eat all the bird seed
Only later after coffee do I realize
That I'm blessed
if just a little bit tired
