fullness of life
“I came to a clear conclusion, and it is a universal one: To live, to struggle,
to be in love with life—in love with all life holds, joyful or sorrowful—is
fulfillment. The fullness of life is open to all of us.”—Betty Smith
‘tis not life’s fleeting flings
that lend me substance,
nor furtive johncrow wings
that give me distance
from things mundane o’er which
a wild world clamours.
my fabric takes its stitch
from sturdy hammers
whose pendulum excites
a nobler spirit
to calculate love's heights,
minute by minute,
whereto my soul may soar
to find life’s fatness.
beyond a glance, much more
than ranking rat nests
becomes the parliament
for nobler proceeds;
no grave predicament
for him who concedes
to rid earth’s kingdom of
death’s pestilences.
‘tis thus i rise above
death's consequences.
