Meet His Friends Night
Tonight's the night
the "meet his friends" night
I'm ready for this
nervcited (nervous excited) even
and it's gone great so far
I've had a couple of drinks
and took a taste
of Mark's
ginger ale & whiskey
something something
I don't think he
noticed how strategic
I was putting my lips on
the same exact spot as his
It made me smile
with each calculated sip
We were fixing to call it a night
when the Karaoke DJ decided
to give a shout out.
"This song is dedicated to my best
friend who passed away a few years back
And to his fiancé that's here tonight
This is for you"
I turned to my left
and there she was.
Right next to me
His song faded
into the background
when I realized it was her
She had her head held high with
a heavy smile. Braving
the unexpected attention.
It's hard to believe we had just
been laughing about her wreck
of a date earlier in the week.
Her demeanor completely shifted
as her features narrated a story
of a land not so far away.
Where sometimes the prince
dies and you reluctantly move on.
At that moment, to me,
she exuded power and grace.
It's amazing what you can
find in a quick glance at a bar
In a place with spilled
drinks and abandoned ashtrays
And her eyes, they had
so many memories
in the form of tears.
None wanting to be spilled
but instead hugged her eyes
not wanting to fall
No matter the gravity
It felt like I was intruding so I
looked away. Gifting her some
space and privacy in a bar
filled with curious strangers
When the song was almost
over I leaned in and asked the
question I already knew
"Was that you"
She nodded yes - not
wanting to say it out loud.
I didn't care that I barely knew her
She was trying so hard to keep
it together I felt her courage
needed to be acknowledged
I couldn't help it.
In I went, with my little arms
and gave her a big hug.
"I'm so sorry"
She nodded her head and whispered
thank you
It was time for us to go
so I smiled and stepped back
Mark grabbed my hand and we
left the bar
In the parking lot he gave me
a piggyback ride back to his truck
I was still a little tipsy but
still remembered to thank
him with a kiss on his neck
as I clung on to him.
Grateful he was alive

Author's Note
This is a true story.
Later in the evening after we got home (his place)
I cried like a baby about the whole situation.
He of course didn't know what happened. LOL
But he handled it like the amazing person he is and just
gave me a hug:)
And if there is a typo it is invisible to me! LOL

Oh! This is so lovely!
You wove an amazing tale. The details of it, the ashtrays, the way your lips went where his touched like a secret kiss, the anticipation and hope and nerves and joy.
And then the dark moment of truth.
This is masterful storytelling. You are such a force of nature and to see the world through your eyes is a gift. Thank you for sharing such a big night! It was kind of you to be kind to her.
Beautiful writing. As always.

Hi Betty,:)
I'll never forget her. I still think about her occasionally to this day.
I remember when we got home, we were in his room. He was brushing his teeth in the bathroom with the light on. The rest of the bedroom was dark and there I sat on the bed. Something about him inside that light got me all teary eyed.
And I'm not a crier! Especially while drinking - that has never happened to me - like ever. But it was so symbolic - that bathroom light - and how it can turn off.
And I was like - okay here it goes - I'm going to cry like the Llorona from Mexican folklore! And I did. LOL
thanks for all of your snaps on this.
I've been meaning to write this for a while but

Dear A,
Intense comes to mind. I really appreciated the isolated moments in that evening between the description of the venue, the connection with Mark and his drinks glass and that particular moment of you in the room and the bathroom light. That metaphor of the light turning out is so symbolic to me, and how life can change with the flip of a switch. The flow of this was great. You kept everything moving and interesting and oh so poignant. Masterful piece of writing. H🌷

Hi H!!
Yes, I cried like a baby later in the evening once we got home.
I was going to put it in this write but I wanted to keep it in gratitude with life and love vibe. You are right, it can switch on you just like that light switch.
Thank you for such a great comment.
I've seen a couple of places I want to edit!
Oh, and we had dinner with his son and girlfriend earlier in the evening too. It went great until I almost choked to death on my chicken piccata!! hahaha
Mark's son's girlfriend even gave me the awkward pat on the back trying to help me out. I was like OMG!! Don't let me go out like this!! Too funny
Thanks for stopping by and the RL:)

Well hello there.
Yes, your brief rundown of the events is correct except for the several years ago. It was a few - big difference. Enough time to mourn and go on dates and still have friends recognize your past without triggering a complete meltdown.
Thanks for your snaps on this write.

Oof! That final line was an anchor to the entire poem. Gratitude is such a blessing that many take for granted each day. I am happy you realize the gift that you have, and are grateful for it's presence in your life.
May you guys have many, many beautiful years together.

Hi Ahavati!
I totally agree with you. Being there with his friends was awesome and it's okay to have empathy for stranges too,
I was totally caught off guard, myself, but she handled it with such pride. She wasn't angry at all about the unexpected song tribute. She bravely smiled and welcomed the emotion.
I was in awe:)

Sadness at times overshadow our blessing, yes there was a love lost within this piece. But there is so much positivity here within this piece. Your dude took you out to meet his friends, usually family and friends are withheld when it comes to a dude. These are signs that we're truly feeling this and don't mind things moving even farther. Great piece Lady and love where you and Mark are currently. Tight

Hey Meme!
It was a positive evening for sure. It ended somewhat sadly but
that's okay. Mark got a good dose of how I can be emotional, and he handled it pretty good. We also had dinner with his son and his girlfriend earlier in the evening.
Read Honoria's reply. LOL
I can be a bit of a wreck sometimes - but it's all life.
Good and bad.
always cherish the good
and remember to breathe during the bad.
It will pass:)

I love the whole scenario and the details you pour into this. I enjoyed the part where you sip from the same spot, that's cute and the piggyback ride, sounds like a great night even though there was a sad, serious moment.

Hi LJ!!
It was all a bit of a whirlwind. When we pulled up to the bar it didn't look like it was open. I looked at him and was like
"where did you bring me" LOL
All in all it was a great evening. Even played a video game that was a bowling game. He beat me but I got a Turkey!! Three strikes in a row. Nope - he didn't get a one. LOL
She had such an impact to my evening. I've been sitting on this for a while. Finally sat down and started writing. I see a few things I can edit here and there - but I got the gist of it down.
Thanks for the RL and for stopping by:)

I'm afraid I'd have lost it & cried on the spot. Which, of course, would have made her cry. You handled it beautifully. And that last line spoke volumes of where your head & heart were

Hi willow
It's amazing how moments with someone you just met can have such a huge impact on you. You never know what someone goes through until someone puts it out on Karaoke night. But she wasn't upset about it, I'd say she was proud.
Hurt but proud to have known him.
We're all human and that kind of loss hurts.
So, I had to give her a hug:)
I did cry like a baby at Mark's place - and he was like
"what just happened" LOL

You are absolutely right. It was a delayed reaction because I was shocked. Totally unexpected. Everyone was partying, dancing even. then this heartfelt moment came, and it got to me.
Made me remember
Life is precious:)

I didn't know about the conversation because I didn't crowd ya! I like that you had conversations with a few people. And I just watched you and admired how you carried yourself. And yes, I was so proud that you were with me. You are a pure gem.
Do you know one of the first things that I noticed about you, back when we were new here?
Your pure heart. You carry no bitterness forward. You are honestly kind to your core. No pretenses. It was an absolute joy getting to know you, Del. You have a weightless heart. It floats. And it was like you brought me brand new oxygen.
And here we are, huh.
I know I have a bit of a rough past compared to yours. But I never lost my integrity. Nor have you. We belong together. And when I am old and hunched over with a walker, I will still give you a piggyback. Because you're my angel, you are never a burden.
I will take all of your tears upon my shoulder, because I will be holding you close.

Hey sweetie,
This was an emotional write. I got really teary eyed when I finished because I feel so blessed. I really do. And I don' t throw that word around a lot - blessed. It's reserved for real moments like the birth of my boys and my close loved ones - and you are definitely in that circle.
So, get ready and get nice and comfy because I'm not going anywhere. We got lots of future still ahead mister - no walker just yet - and yes - you will give me piggybacks even then because they are awesome!!! LOL
Just like you and that hair!!!
You've given me lots to look forward to.
Me and you:)
Love you and thanks for the RL:)

How can I forget!!
for those who make it down to read this reply
We walked into the bar and right away
Mark's buddy was excited to show him his new knife.
He pulls out a huge knife and passes it to Mark.
And, of course, Mark takes the Crocodile Dundee knife.
You know the scene - if not watch this!
https://youtu.be/Q_JBkqLmHns
So, Mark hands the knife back
and say's
"You wouldn't need a knife if you knew how to fight"
LOL

This is one of the most emotional poem/stories I have read. You take me on your journey that night into the heart of this woman and your own. Love how you start off with that teasing lip touch on the drink and surprise me with one of those rare events in life. And the follow up of your own reaction with your man brushing his teeth and the tears made it into an emotional tour de force. This is what storytelling can be when told by a writer who can truly capture in words what is in her heart. Your did that here magnificently and with tenderness abounding.

Hi John:)
This comment is amazing. Thank you for taking the time to read this and giving me your take on it. It was an emotional moment. I was in shock for a moment. Then later in the moment it was an avalanche of feeling. I felt so fortunate to be in the same space as someone I'm in love with. the thought of it being taken away unexpectantly got me emotional:)
thank for the RL and stopping by amigo:)
