Back to Sleep

A photograph from years ago,
  recognizable but strange
She didn’t know what lay ahead,
  how things would rearrange
All the fights were familiar ones,
  memories stayed buried deep
The kool-aid tasted sweet back then,
  the wolves still looked like sheep.

She looks back with a sigh,
  “Let me go back to sleep…”

take me back to before I woke up
just let me close my mind
heart wrapped safe in its own cocoon
comfortable and blind
let me go
   back to sleep
     please…
rewind

Why did she ever want to taste
  the knowledge of evil and good
To see the world with an open heart
  and all she had misunderstood
Now enemies are everywhere,
  but most of all inside
Stirring up all the darkness
  she had worked so hard to hide

“Let me go back to sleep now,
  please,” she cries

take me back to before I woke up
just let me close my mind
heart wrapped safe in its own cocoon
comfortable and blind
let me go
   back to sleep
      please…
rewind
