Human Animals
In the shadow of the ancients, we walk,
with the gods of creation hovering near,
testing and revealing our place and purpose.
We are like the animals,
sucking the tender breasts of our mothers,
breathing the same breath of life
and finding the same ends.
As the sparrow falls, so too, do we,
each death is but one note in the song,
each life a brief, small pitch sung in truth
against an infinite silence.
We embrace each other with animal lust
and make new life as intended by our creators.
We writhe in the passions of our purpose and
pray that these pleasures will never cease.
But endings follow every beginning.
And when it is time, we return to the
loving embrace of the earth’s icy arms.
Couched inside this spinning planet,
we find our kinship with the animals,
sharing their place within a grand, indifferent design.
