Remembering a Father's Love

A father’s love was mine for a time,
But later his heart would roam.
Desires for more than a family’s love
Took him far from home.

I thought he was my love for life,
Curled fingers inside his hand.
But life would lead me to other men,
Where I surrendered my treasured plans.

I long to go back to that innocent time,
But it will never be so again.
I'm a woman today but still daddy's girl.
The lust of my flesh always wins.

Author's Note
This is a rewrite of an earlier poem I wrote and that mother published a version in her poetry book. While pregnant, I've been thinking of the past and looking at old photos.
