yes he was undoubtedly a legend of hindmost music sure, good to see you know of him & his works friend. as by me, am more into the South Indian music, by maestro Ilayaraja ( living legend). AR.Rahman the Oscar awarded musician & many others..

hez not of present gen too & doesn’t have pop influence much though western elements find place in maestro, but still it’s unique n folky n fusion n blends with the emotions of much .. will share Sow’s of his to you sure. will share AR . Rahman’s too, hez bit more western in elements. maestro is much organic for me :) thnx for the write & reply Keith, interesting:)

Sholay. Only tat. Cos t was a trendsetter of sorts.. apart from tat, being imbibed into the south indian music & film industry which two ( music & films) are almost synonymous here . & Sadly there is north south divide in culture language , music film etc etc etc,, that makes a south indian unheard of RD & vice-versa for a north heard of IR ,.. but both are same age legends i hope ..

There's that much of a divide with North & Southern India.? Why is that? Are the languages & cultures different? Where would you say the divide is in the country, what section?

Ah perhaps it's manipulated or true..   the racial differentiation of North & south Ancestral Indian genes in the racial roots -  they divided ( they here is our pre independence rulers or their historians j hope, the Britishers , lol no offence - they did the good use of divide & rule)    
   
so the south are the dravidians & north the aryans .. but it doesn't stop with tat . the current host of politics use them as divide & rule  too .    
language us totally different in south - Tamil ( we tamils consider it the mother of all langs;) telugu kannada tulu etc etc &  there comes the north with Hindi ( Persian Urdu influence) & it's related langs,. this said, nort south music food etc etc everything differs ,, though some commonality der . North us wheat based staple , south the rice . music & dance forms, histories etc etc . but some common threads derr.    
Lol am not any racist . but you can feel once you here. The roots totally different.    
southern peninsula is a portion that floated away from Ethiopia Madagascar australia antartica i hope & the north been der as part of central Asia extensions ,.. much more depths in der Keith . dunn wanna scribble in ur pages . will do somewhere
