Image for the poem Atonement

Atonement

I walk into the light...dazzling
a darkling of fervor
needful redemption
a prayer goes forth
a spell if you will

it is in me to show our Father honor
he masterminded everything
the smallest theater to the grandest play

it's lonely at the top
sacred vows my thoughts rise to greet him
in my shallow need, I ask awry
it is for him to bless or take away

I can make argument with this
sometimes he relents and turns back his wrath
sometimes I'm hell-bent

a strong will
he says much like his own temperament
it grieves me my anger
stings my tongue with the venom I spill
poisoning those around me

suffer not the innocent
those are set aside for him alone
greedy deeds done in the dark and so forth
you will atone

let your whispers be heard
and rise as incense
what's spoken in the dread

can damn you
