hiraeth soul

Despite my mind thinking rationally
And my heart feeling wholly
My soul rejects the fundamental possession of this life.

Yearning for the ancient
It quietly cries and seethes and grieves

No matter the lightness my body seeks
My soul remains heavy in custody
Seeping into my unfocused mind
And scraping into my weary bones
Whispering to my heart that this is not the way

But it is what we are given this day
Nourishment for disease
Thoughts for illness
Sustenance for greed
Material for meaning

Not even love seems enough
For my hiraeth soul’s contentment

Author's Note
Hiraeth
n. (Welsh)
A spiritual longing for a home which maybe never was. Nostalgia for ancient places to which we cannot return. It is the echo of the lost places of our soul's past and our grief for them.
