“It's not always about being the hero, sometimes it's about
                    being the trickster.”—Anansi Boys

                         akan-jamaican passion
                    landscaped not by vext ration
a little axe that fells big trees
cunning in sun and rain and breeze
     fearful of no assassin
stealthy without moccasin

                         an octopus with human
                    face and spider’s acumen
he secrets tales from west afrique
          his tongue inelegant but chic
he is no white house truman
nor righteousness his crewman

                         his family the pity
                    of every far-flung city
               his seances bring him potluck
e’en when he spends his wife’s last buck
     to gorge himself colicky
non-heroic and tricky

                         anansewa his daughter
                    may cause a vicious slaughter
unless her man agrees to feed
          anansi and his starving breed
     his bridge less than whitewater
who has for marriage sought her
