Image for the poem back in the day...

back in the day...

we knew each other
back in the day
when we felt the angst of growing pains
but didn't know what to do with it
so we tore through the world
like we were invincible
all bravado & recklessly defiant
telling ourselves we had control of our lives
careening along in a roller-coaster life
strapping ourselves in with arms in the air
as life occurred in a whirling blur
vinyl spinning at full volume
helped mute the sound of our internal howling
posters on our walls displaying all our idols
from Lionel, Prince & Michael...
...Cyndi, Stevie & Sinead...
...to Journey, Foreigner & Kansas
and a collage of countless others
their lyrics existed as the soundtrack for our journey
dance floors & flashing lights
setting trends with our grooves & our moods
choreographed entirely by our frenetic energy
us in our tiny skirts & hair all fluffed & feathered
putting off sleep until we dropped
because life was one big party
or so we imagined...or pretended
we shook the ground when we stomped
hormones on full throttle
trying to drown out the sounds
as our heads were awash with thoughts
being crammed with centuries of knowledge
never mind the dysfunction in our own daily existence
every day for us was survival
but through fashion & the tunes
we were immortal in our vibrance
I don't want to go back
but seeing you today...
...reminded me who we used to be
...back in the 80s
