Heroine
Heroine
Ragged souls seated around room
Seeking solace from storm lashed lives
Woman conducts orchestra of therapy
Her soft curves and smile
Soothes tempest tossed madmen
In the quiet presage of session
She sits gazing in contemplative beauty
Her sage words play the piano of our hearts
“Women and men are made differently.
To deny that is to deny the truth.”
Calm sea of communing
Threatened by tidal surge
Of former prison inmate
Whose stories about serving last suppers
To prisoners on death row
Are spoken from a heart of maim never mended
That finds him spooked by patient’s eyes
As he rises from chair like a wrathful deity
Slips jacket off prepared to smite
Petite therapist arises
Like a tropic storm
She gathers strength for a feminine foray
Pinions man with fingers to neck
Other hand presses womanly energy into his back
His eyes glaze, jaw goes slack
She soothes his testosterone addled psychosis
Like water that penetrates stone
Her softness melts his granite muscles
And she escorts him gently but firmly
Out the door
Ragged souls seated around room
Seeking solace from storm lashed lives
Woman conducts orchestra of therapy
Her soft curves and smile
Soothes tempest tossed madmen
In the quiet presage of session
She sits gazing in contemplative beauty
Her sage words play the piano of our hearts

Author's Note
This is a true story about a social worker at a group therapy center for the poor. The former prison inmate was part of the group. I watched this happen. Most of the people were not former prisoners he was the only one I knew of. She was bold and put herself in harm's way to protect a patient in the group. Indeed women are built differently. I couldn't see a man doing what she did successfully and by her mere touch calming this man. She was confident in her womanly power and quite brave.

Is this a story about a nurse that takes care a bunch or prisoners?
Oddy, I imagined a woman with pink old style nurse outfit in a gloomy ragged prison cell. Not sure if I understand correctly, but those were my visuals. Either way, the woman is quite brave.
To be bold yet so frail and gentle... Women are built differently aren't they..

Ohh I see.. the therapy group was a direct relation not anything complicated at like a recovery place to rehabilitate within the prison area...
I now understand why all the nurses are so beautiful. You need that kind of power to charm or take control... quite interesting... thank you for sharing your story!
I especially love true stories!

Actually, the therapy place wasn't in a prison. It was a place for mentally ill people to receive therapy here in the community. Nothing to do with prisons except that this man happened to be a former prisoner.

Yes, that's what I meant!
I apologize I wasn't clear enough with what I meant.
I hope the treatment goes well with the guy. Find peace.

Me too. This was way back in 2004. He was a nice guy. After this event, he came back to the group and apologized. He said the devil got into him.

Nice setting of scene...
To me, this speaks as much
to the effects of poverty as much as perhaps prison...
Think about this...
Only a fraction of the homeless
and impoverished attend things like therapy...
And the ones who do not...
Are a higher concentration of...
Animalistic individuals...
Brother, the other day I was...
Snowshoeing I guess it's called...
I was out by this place I call: Hobbit Woods.
It's a woods down the tracks by factories
and a graveyard...
This past summer there was an increase
in people living in those woods...
I saw a tent posted up behind this building...
Then a very large 10 person tent in the field...
And tents in the woods...
So I went there in the first snow storm...
Just wanted to see if folks stayed...
The tent behind building gone...
The 10 person tent gone...
But then...
Two individuals come out of the
woods with snow suits...
I had just watched this
outdoor boys video where
I learned you can use alcohol
burner and heated tent in snow...
I would personally go into
a thermal mass...
But yes...
I was coming up on
them as they came out of the woods...
Reaching them...
It's like in Detroit where domesticated
dogs became feral over a generation...
These guys had ferocious looks about them...
Maybe it is touching fingertips
with the primal...

Love your story of that experience in the woods, Cipher. Only the poor lucky enough to have medical insurance go to programs like the one here. Those who are without income certainly are on a survival level. I think many of these people would benefit from therapy. They just don't have access to it. I believe that homelessness can bring one to the bottom rung of Maslow's pyramid. Once the basics are given these people can rise back into a state of dignity. It is our buccaneer capitalist system that has failed them. This reminds me of a French film called, "Lovers Under the Bridge" about lovers who live under a bridge in Paris. We are all human and feel pain and hunger. I recall a leader of the homeless in DC who committed suicide because a woman didn't requite his love. He was a former homeless person who chose to live in a shelter. These people have hearts and souls but are crushed under the weight of not having the basics. Thank you so much for your in-depth story. It is much appreciated.

Re. Heroine
This is an incredibly well thought out feat of fabulous writing, my dearest John. Bravo!
I think that some people have a calling and are also profoundly sensative to others. This woman had the education and the confidence of being to take control of a situation that could have turned on a dime.... that's the truest definition of courage. I'm sure if you showered her with praise and well deserved claps on the back of genuine appreciation she'd only say she was just 'doing her job' .... another tell and a sign of the real caliber of someone's character, imo.
Really interesting read and as always, just stunning in your poetic styling.
Much love, my lovely (and very much missed) friend.

Oh honey, I am thrilled to see you here again. I have missed you like the desert misses the rain, my darling friend. Love your thoughts on this poem. Indeed, I showed her an early version of this poem written back then that didn't refer to her but she knew it was about her. She loved my poetry which I read to the group often. She was a heroine in my book. Seconds after this event she just continued the session like nothing had happened. That took real strength and power. She also healed me back then with constant support and even pretended to be my mother chastising me for a fun game we both enjoyed. I had confessed to her that I enjoyed this role playing and she obliged me. Once, on Good Friday, she and I walked barefoot together in the grass and played volleyball one on one. When she, me, and a group of people sat at the picnic table together a woman said I had a crush on our instructress. She just laughed and smiled unbothered. I will always remember her kindness and toughness when I needed it.
Love you my darling. I am so glad to read your words here.
Much love my lovely and very much missed darling friend,
John

I adore your words here, mysteriouslady. You have delved into the mystery of femininity and unveiled its hidden powers in ways that only a woman can comprehend fully. Love that you identify with my woman character here and found her a kindred spirit in the sisterhood.
