orphan
“There’s a day that is coming when all the last will be first and
every orphan will be home.”―Steven Curtis Chapman
afghan wars
have orphaned me,
in stages.
silent stars
weep over me,
for wages
overdue
cannot be paid
to parents
whose debut
to where hopes fade
circumvents
golden dreams
pregnant with fires
that ember
midst the screams
that past desires
remember.
paternal
orphan, they said,
when papa
got the call,
his blood war-bled―
my abba!
maternal
orphan, unfledged,
when mama
took the fall,
facing, post-pledged,
death's trauma.
no one's child,
double-orphaned
by life's death;
war-defiled,
still i defend
my last breath.
