love songs

I’ve often thought
that people with bruised faces
and battered hearts
in the contours of which
you find experience
write the best love songs

the blandest hue of LA pop
is fine when you’re fifteen
and privileged
and view love only as
the trading of sweet nouns

but broken teeth and fag embers
tell stories deeper than the beds
of seas across which vipers roam

“I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms

The wind was whistling all its charms”
