XMAS 1986

Hello folk; I'm so glad to be alive
17th September - to-day won Singles Championship 22-5
70 years old - bowling-mad - I've made my goal
My name has gone up on Popes Mead's Honours Wall.

This personal success has gone to my pen
Out comes my rhythmic trend - a spurt - when
Out pours my feelings - my brain starts to tick
What a nice year this has been - Nineteen Eighty Six?

This 1986 epistle - "Yours truly' comes first
Must be careful now - my head might just burst
A "personality change" can come - so it is said
No fear - Bridget will always keep a level head.

Looking at you all - joy peers thro' your eyes
Never in a lifetime your eyes ever lie
We have all in some way experienced success
We have all in some way extended happiness.

Little Claire is exploring in a world of her own
Stumbling words - now sentences progress she has shown
Emma soon stepping out to school and a world outside
The beginning of learning and nourishment for her little mind.

Good Luck my two pets - I'm with you all the way
Tell you a secret pets - you inspire me every day
Those little concerts we play I do really treasure
Knitting those gaudy jumpers gives me so much pleasure.

Lets speed on to the Turners - come sunshine - come rain
Kaye's accent mainly on her left leg - on her vein
Roy's specs go on oftener - his hair shows more grey
You both are growing more distinguished dears in a graceful way.

Yours holidays abroad have been but few
This year you relished in the taste of sunny Corfu
At home Kaye - you won pairs Badminton Cup - Oh; Boy;
At home Roy - I forgot your birthday - 1st time too - Oh;Roy;

Lisa - now you - a big relaxed change my pet
All come about by the varied people you have met
Your confidence comes over when you make that call
And when you step out of the office - you seem to walk "tall".

Carry on my sweet - just the way you are
Reserved - happy - and contended - just like your "Ma"
Add sport to your programme - that too makes you glow
Keep to your taste in colour as well - especially the yellow.

In August Lee Haydn you passed - you had the "'All Clear!
Meant that in college you could carry on another year
The news made me jump - bounced right into the air
Lee Haydn - you made it - I knew it - indeed I was there.

Karl Edward - you next - apt to say things in jest
You excel in your own way - different from the rest
Progressing as you go - you love challenge and the "new!
You reached "Target" easily - you got tops in the queue.

Right into your mind I've wanted to peep
Altho' you're so outright - there still lies something deep
I'm proud of you boy - choose what's close to your heart
Don't rush over anything - you'll tip the apple-cart.

Corinne and Alec, my dears - toys everywhere
What specimens of beauty - both Emma and Claire
You all look a picture - you shine through your eyes
Such a tonic too - that holiday in the Scilly Isles.

Preserved your house Alec by painting outside
Paint makes your nose bleed - what a bleeding bind;
You feel better again Corinne - you do - thank God
Let's hope you'll now keep away from that Redhill Ward.

Thank you Alec and Corinne for that family "get together'
We were so lucky with such lovely sunny weather
Sunday 24th August the day - we were just twenty
The younger generations - George, myself, Frank and Betty.

Nice to have you with us again George, Howard and Yvonne
So pleased you are better Howard - the tension gone;
Glad you and Yvonne enjoyed your trip to the Azores
"Did you keep everyone awake Howard with your nightly snores?"

"All the best" to you three in Nineteen Eighty Seven
Health and Happiness prevailing in No. 29 and Eleven
Got to say this George - such an opportune time
Our happy companionship must enter my rhyme.

Life's flow becomes easier when happiness pumps in
A brother and sister-in-law friendship is a rare thing
Life is what you make it - that's true - isn't it then?
Two people I know would agree with that - yes - Marge and Ken.

Each year for many years we've grasped at some joy
A tonic - a holiday - we both still continue to enjoy
A regular day out - a lunch - the day never boring
Often ending up eating fish and chips in the car at Goring.

Well everyone - that's all for now - Ah; MORE CHEERS still
On Monday 22nd December - yes - wedding of Margaret and Phil
Come on Emma and Claire - shout out - nice and loud
"Hurrah' to Granny - Santa certainly has been around.

Thanks Kaye and Roy - a lovely Xmas Day again dears
Happy New Year to you all - contentment with no fears
Thanks for listening - been my pleasure - now away with my pen
Will end as I started "Success and Happiness" - God Bless - Amen.

Author's Note
This poem is by my Great Grandmother, Bridget. She wrote a poem every Christmas and read it aloud at Christmas dinner. She talks about every accomplishment throughout the year. I find it beautiful that although we never met, we share the same love of poetry. So blessed to have found her poems.
