Deeper

Moonlight kindly
through the trees
in a tremble of whisper
her footsteps lead
darkening down
the path to the sea
where white stones shimmer
and breakers heave
Quickly now
to the tide's embrace
a tickle of toes
for a tearful face
Under cruel cliff's sigh
by rockpool's gleam
their fate was never
what she dreamed
Wading out
her back to the land
from life's despairing
outstretched hand
to his coldest kiss
with the longest sleep
and lost love
waiting
in the deep
