    “All that we see or seem is but a dream
         within a dream.”―Edgar Allan Poe

mine are not nighttime pillow dreams
        that are, at daybreak, fled;
                they come forth, bursting at the seams,
                        when slumberfest is dead.

                                my eyes are open widest, when
                                        i gaze upon the face
                                                of destinations far from men
                                                        who falter in the race.

                       for all my dreams are of the day,
                               my visions of the light;
                       my great ambitions for the quay,
                           where men of courage fight

for continence and peace and love
        in war-torn hinterlands;
                for human wisdom far above
                        the tackle of vile hands.

                                sleep not to dream, lest darkness kills
                                        the sweet perfume of hope;
                                                conquer the steep and lofty hills,
                                                        ere paradise elope.
