Yet Accompanied by Its Mummy --
The Original
*
Each happy Halloween I rise at dawn
to bolt the doors and nail the windows shut,
on having fixed barbed wire around the lawn
to full protect my petrified stiff butt;
the tigers being slipped to fortify
the ten-foot fence of tough tried Tungsten rock,
the rabid rats and jackals on standby,
the pet bonobo armed with every Glock;
the gators readied in the fresh-dug moat,
the orisons sent up to Mars and Set,
the speech "St. Crispin's Day" pronounced by rote,
the Shakespeare nice rewinding on cassette --
for each All Hallows' Eve my pricking thumbs
portend the trick-or-treater TERROR comes . . .
