There is risk in all derision
Since payback is a beastly bitch
Which haunts every rude decision
Folks make to scratch their mean streak itch.
And round and round the itch will go,
In perpetual invective,
Which will not ebb as much as flow
As the knee-jerk's first corrective.
Unschooled, as they always are,
The reactionaries abound
Loving to spread blame near and far
In busybody Sensurround,
Which, stupidly, they hope will shame...

Ha! This is EXCELLENT!

There's such an obvious gap between leadership and the rest of us where it becomes clear that getting things done for the commoners takes a back seat to electioneering.

I don't think everyone needs to agree - but at least have some grace in disagreeing.
The art of debate has been lost to moral high ground and like you expressed - public shaming.
We are made of a society of different people and outlooks. That should be okay even if your stance on a
subject goes against the norm.

I am totally on board with graciousness, but it seems like we've gotten to a point where the first thing the players do is attack the referees.
Somehow we have to see that the bravest among us are the ones who prove they really want a peaceful society by their example, like getting rid of their weapons or just rededicating themselves to mutually supportive discourse, and that can most certainly be done even when disagreeing, just as you say:)
