When We Were Ghosts

When we were ghosts
I was young and didn't know butter
Make-believe was called, just pretend
There were no cowboy hats in Nashville

The TV had rabbit ears and test patterns
There were typewriters and old folks
My big sister had a doll with a broken leg
I walked to school in the snow and rain

Chicken fingers were something to laugh at
Converse Tennis shoes were $5 a pair
Daddy had a car accident and broke himself
Mom had a cyst removed from her breasts

I learned the Pledge of Allegiance
My best friend drowned in a rock quarry
Granny  smoked a corncob pipe
Gumby and Pokey melt in the sun

Someone stole my bicycle
Grandpa read the Bible and chewed tobacco
The radio and typewriter are in the garage now
When we were ghosts
