The metaphor of having your guts shredded and doused in a burning astringent is badass.
It tugs out the horror, dread, anxiety and other bullshit that makes us feel like our guts are going to burst out of belly. It's a good way to show dying on the inside, and then adding more to your imposed pain through choice.
