Lay It All Out

If I could allow myself to express how I feel
Perhaps I'd no longer be a prisoner within my mind
Instead, I choke under this pressing steel
That the world views as skin, yet no different than blackout blinds.
-
They say "fight for love, for the right to live"
How can I take those words seriously when the speakers break their oaths?
I can't afford to show what's deep within
Lest I relinquish the last part of me I can still control.
-
Breathe in, lay it all out
Your bleeding heart lies forgotten on the ground
If you can't trust yourself, then who can you trust?
The last particles of innocence crumbles into dust.
-
I remember whom I wanted to be
No stress nor competition, just my own inner thoughts
The world cruelly set fire to my childhood dream
And had the audacity to question why I was distraught.
-
Breathe in, lay it all out for me
Your aching soul yearns to break free
Leave the past behind, and aim for the future
Your aspirations have never been purer.
