Time Flows Like a River, Version 2

Time flows like a river up here in the sky,
Ever-changing, ever-flowing, never still.
I am a leaf, drifting along its course,
At the mercy of the current, without choice.

But then I see a black hole looming in the distance,
A dark and hungry beast that defies all resistance.
I am drawn to it, like a moth to a flame,
And I wonder what lies beyond the abyss.

I get closer and closer, until I can see the light
Twisting and turning as it is sucked in.
I feel the time slowing down, as if I am in a dream,
And I wonder what will happen to me.

I cross the threshold and enter the black hole,
And all is darkness. I see nothing, I hear nothing,
I feel nothing. I am lost in the void.

I am not sure how long I am here, but eventually
I begin to feel something. It is a faint light,
A distant sound, a sense of movement.

I open my eyes and see that I am back in the universe.
I am not sure how I got here, but I am grateful to be alive.
I look around and see the stars, and I know that I am part of something bigger than myself.

I am a leaf on the river of time,
And I am grateful for the journey.

Author's Note
I recently read the The Order of Time, by Carlo Rovelli and decided to turn my thoughts into a poem from an astronauts perspective. As Rovelli explains, the apparent existence of time — in our perceptions and in physical descriptions, written in the mathematical languages of Newton, Einstein and Erwin Schrödinger — comes not from knowledge, but from ignorance.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.
