Mother Corruption, The World is Starving
The ocean liner sailed across
Her glass of scotch on the rocks
The night was unfinished
The moon unsatisfied
She had yet to scupper the ship
In a rattle of ice
The rain is falling
The world can crush you down to dust
It can flatten you out
Roll you like doe, bake you
And break you to crumbs
To be scattered
On the floor of the gods
The world can suck you
Like a humbug like a sherbet lemon
Suck all the taste from you
Suck you down to a slither
And crunch you up to shards
Of boiled sweets
Stuck in the teeth
Of mechanical jaws
It can build you to pyramids
To skyscrapers to mountains
And then the mountains
Turn to bone
It can melt you down to iron
Merge you with carbon
Turn you to steel
Hammer you into shape
Into something you don’t recognize
Some people rust
Without knowing strength
The world is hungry
It’s starving for you
And if you don’t check it
You may be consumed
All I am sure of is:
You are alive
