Image for the poem On the Edge of Goodbye

On the Edge of Goodbye

sometimes I wish
life came with
background music,
at least then
I’d know
what to expect

I never saw this coming

everything
that could be said
has come barreling
from these chests and
unbridled tongues;
and now we sit,
looking everywhere but
at each other

I don’t want you to go

the heavy silence
slips between our words
now few and getting
farther between

I want to tell you my truth

but soon there will be
nothing left to say,
nothing left to lose;
it slipped our grasp
the moment we
forgot to hold on
