Three Words

I love the sound of those
three little words you say, but
warm waters pull me from the shore and
I doubt you. My feet no longer touch bottom and
I’m afraid

Even when
our bodies share the
deepest possible touching,
I feel alone.

Author's Note
My married lover often says, "I love you," but I have my doubts.
I haven't told him about my mother's absence. There's much I haven't shared with him.
