Sacred Vows

On a sunny spring day, we held hands over the
holy text and whispered prayers for our future.
We spoke the vow “till death do us part”
through tears shared with family and friends.
I’d found the love of my life and knew that
only death could part us.

How is it that I died in darkness only seven years later?
How does death’s whisper carry such seduction?
He promised pleasures without costs in his bargain for my soul.

How did these breasts, made pure by my husband’s love and the
sweet lips of my daughter fall into the
hands of a stranger? What barriers of
conscience broke inside of me
so that I opened the sacred portal of my
husband’s love and my daughter’s life?
How did the unthinkable become the undeniable?

Oh, how easily he spread my lips to take my treasures!

These questions came to me on the night I sinned.
