The Bleakness of Solitude

How bleak and desolate is the heart,
That beats alone in the silence of night,
When all around the world seems to depart,
And nothing but emptiness is in sight.

The wretched soul that wanders in the dark,
Amidst the echoes of its own despair,
Feels but a void where once was life's spark,
And none to share the burden of its care.

No warmth of human touch to soothe the pain,
No friendly voice to offer kind reprieve,
No love to light the dreary path again,
And bid the heart its shattered hope retrieve.

Thus, in the stillness of the lonely hour,
The heart laments its solitary fate,
And longs for love's sweet balm to give it power,
And break the chains that bind it to its state.

Loneliness, thou art a cruel foe,
That strikes the heart with thy relentless blow,
And leaves it wounded in the world below,
To bear the burden of its grief alone.
