Cinderella Clothes

If I could dress her in finer hues
than these russet browns which kiss her head,
that this careless autumn has bestowed
'tould be finer than Burns's rose of red.

And dressed in clothes for Easter's springtime
which April showered would show her form,
Herrick's Julia in his silken rime
would swoon thinking herself in verse reborn.

I would shower her in pearls and gems
and bring her the finest silken coat,
and kiss her head with diamond diadem
and place golden gorgets round her throat.

But since I can do nought of these
I shall praise her Cinderella clothes,
and on our rusty tandem coach we'll creak
to the dance, at the old folks home...
