Return Thanks

thank you, my friend
for being in my life
briefly, as it was
yet it was precious

the day I last saw you
tethered to a hospital bed
all white except for your shirt
pale green on pale

I said my goodbye
whispered Go with God
I left the room
knowing you were going home

the pain and sorrow on your wife's face
was once mirrored on mine
I knew the deep pain
of being left behind

there would be no fishing
on our usual lake
no more campfires
and telling tall tales

instead you would be on a journey
towards the starlit skies
golden dusts strewn
on vast lakes and sea.

Be strong Catherine, he is always with you in your heart and your children
