in tall grass and under bare feet,
summer’s heat rides high;
I meet her curious stare,
halfway between our houses
her nose is the same size
as mine, and turned up
on the end
we are both just six
fast friends, sworn sisters
pretending away the afternoon
until the light grows sleepy
giggling, I am overwhelmed
with affection
the waning afternoon breeze
frames her hair
in a wild halo of sienna
and brushes her lips
in dark salmon,
the color of my sudden love
she is beautiful bathed
in childhood sunlight;
impulsively, I kiss her cheek
and wait, breathlessly
she returns my laugh,
threading her fingers
through mine;
she calls me silly
we sit in silence
waiting for our mothers’ voices
to call us home,
away from these moments
where the last of innocence lives
